At Least 13 Killed in Ukrainian Drone Strike on Russian Energy Hub in Nizhnekamsk

MOSCOW — At least 13 people were killed after Ukrainian drones struck Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region, hitting a major petroleum hub and nearby civilian facilities, according to Russian authorities and international news reports.

The August 10 attack also left dozens of people injured. Updated regional figures cited by the Associated Press put the number of wounded at 78, while earlier reports had listed 39 injuries.

TANECO Refinery Among Targets

The strike hit the TANECO oil refinery operated by Tatneft, a major energy facility in Nizhnekamsk. Ukraine acknowledged targeting the refinery as part of its continuing campaign against Russian energy infrastructure.

Child and Foreign Nationals Among Victims

Russian officials said a child was among those killed. Uzbekistan’s consulate in Kazan separately confirmed that seven Uzbek citizens died in the attack.

Hostel Also Hit

Reports said a hostel housing workers was also struck, contributing to the civilian casualties. Russian authorities opened a terrorism investigation following the attack.

Ukraine Expands Long-Range Strikes

Nizhnekamsk lies deep inside Russian territory, far from the Ukrainian border. The attack highlights Ukraine’s growing use of long-range drones against oil refineries and other facilities that Kyiv says support Russia’s war effort.

The strike came amid continuing exchanges of drones and missiles between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides reporting casualties from attacks away from the front line.
